Mary Clark, who has served as AU’s senior vice provost and dean of academic affairs since 2014, has been appointed interim provost beginning July 1, according to a campus-wide memo issued by University President Sylvia Burwell Friday.
Clark is a professor at the Washington College of Law teaching women's legal history, legal ethics, judicial politics and property. Her appointment as interim provost comes after Provost Scott Bass announced he would step down on June 29 following 10 years at AU.
“Clark has been an influential leader whose service has positively affected the university in many ways,” Burwell said in the announcement.
Lisa Leff, a history professor, will take over as acting dean of academic affairs and senior vice provost during the transition period. She recently completed a term as the acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Burwell wrote.
As dean of academic affairs, Clark helped with the presidential search and hiring three other deans. She has also served on the the RiSE Leadership committee, the Dean’s Council and the President’s Council.
“I am confident that she will help us maintain momentum during this period of change, while we complete the search for a new provost,” Burwell said.
