More to clubbing than looking good

Safety tips for a night on the town

For many, the first half of fall semester is one long party. Every Friday and Saturday night, students choose between whether or not to attend a frat party or venture out into D.C. and experience the city's nightlife.

For some, these two nights of partying per week just don't cut it. Luckily, Tuesday nights generally offer activity for those who would rather put on their tallest stilettos and dance than swing by that last-minute study session on campus. It is hard to ignore the brightly colored club advertisement fliers that litter the residence halls the first half of the week, and many students find these college club nights advertised appealing.

While clubbing is an exciting alternative to a frat party and offers a chance to meet people outside of the AU bubble, it is important to remember that the club environment can potentially lead to trouble. So, the next time that bright pink flyer looks tempting, keep these safety tips in mind.

  • Never leave your drink unattended. Putting your drink down, even for a few seconds, can lead to disaster. Many "date rape drugs" are undetectable, so you could end up in a dangerous situation.
  • Never go to a club by yourself. This makes you look more vulnerable, and can lead to danger. Besides, it's more fun to go out with friends.

  • Anticipate unsafe situations. If one of your friends is too drunk or is getting a bit too cozy with every guy on the dance floor, take him or her aside and decide whether or not to stay at the club. It's never fun to get kicked out of a club because of a friend's behavior.

  • Don't get caught drinking underage. D.C. has strict underage drinking laws, and while some clubs simply throw out those who violate the law, others get the police involved.

  • Be sure to locate all fire exits. After the incident in Rhode Island where many died after a fire broke out inside a nightclub, fire awareness has become an increasing concern. Don't let this concern get in the way of your good time- just make sure you know how to quickly exit the club should something happen.

  • D.C. taxis are expensive and some drivers may not be too keen on the idea of squeezing you and seven of your friends into the back seat, but don't ever try to walk home by yourself. AU's neighborhood may be safe, but this doesn't go for every section of D.C.
