The Women's Basketball team and the Girl Scouts celebrated the 18th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a basketball game on Saturday.
The day was filled with raffles, prizes and an autograph session at Bender Arena. This year's theme was "Play Fair."
The Girl Scouts, who attended the game earned a merit badge. Also, the Brownies wrote letters to their favorite players on the basketball team to earn the "Write-It" Try-It, and the Junior Girl Scouts earned their "Court Sports" badge for writing a short article on the game.
This event is one of more than 1,000 that take place throughout the country and that emphasized the importance of sports, fitness participation and the positive influence of sports.
This annual celebration started in 1987 in remembrance of Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player. She was admired for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports.
Hyman died in 1986 of Marfan's Syndrome while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan.
