Founder's Day Ball to be held at Union Station Saturday

This year, the annual Founder's Day Ball will be held in Union Station's East Hall. The ball will take place from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m., and Greyhound charter buses will run between AU and Union Station to and from the dance.

"We have 350 total tickets, and as of Tuesday, we have sold 200," said Kyle Taylor, vice president of the Student Confederation, AU's student government. "Students should expect [an] amazing location, at a first-class top-of-the-line facility with a great DJ and a versatile live band."

The ball has previously been held at locations such as the Sequoia Club on K Street, the Old Post Office on Pennsylvania Avenue and the International Trade Center on Pennsylvania Avenue. Founder's Day is a celebration of AU's chartering by an act of Congress in February 1893. The Founder's Day Ball has been an annual AU event for over 20 years.

Tickets will be on sale through Friday in Mary Graydon Center. For any questions, e-mail foundersday@studentconfederation.org.

Men's B-Ball faces rival Holy Cross at Phil Bender Friday

"Beat Holy Cross Week" culminates this Friday with the annual Phil Bender event. The game begins at 8 p.m. in Bender Arena, but those who come early have a chance to win free items such as class apparel.

"[Students] are going to experience the biggest game for the year with fun, prizes, food and T-shirts," said Kristen Parker, Phil Bender coordinator, "[and we hope to provide] as much spirit to get people excited about the game."

"I Did Phil Bender" T-shirts will also be on sale, and there will be raffles for gift certificates to area stores and restaurants.

All week, AU Classes of 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 are holding events in preparation for the game, such as cooking s'mores in the Tavern. On Friday they will be having a pre-game party in the Tavern at 6:30 p.m.

Parker stresses that the campus needs to come together to collect donations for the cause.

Donations will be collected during the game for the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, which was founded by AU alum Suzie Kay. For more information on Phil Bender, e-mail PhilBender2004@yahoo.com.
