Our Take: DTD's good deed

George Washington University's chapter of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity recently confirmed charges of hazing. Their charter was subsequently revoked by the national organization of Delta Tau Delta and they will be banned from GW's campus until at least 2007. As a result of their suspension, the AU chapter of DTD will continue some of the community service activities of GW's former chapter.

According to GW's Code of Student Conduct, hazing is defined as "any action taken or situation created, intentionally, with or without consent, whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule."

Members of the fraternity are allowed to remain in their house until the end of the semester. During that time, the AU chapter of DTD will be picking up some of the GW chapter's philanthropic and community service responsibilities, including the "Adopt a School" program at an elementary school in Southwest D.C., which will take place this spring. The AU chapter is also expected to help "welcome back" the GW chapter in 2007 and assist them in getting re-established.

The Eagle is disappointed that the GW chapter is not getting together unofficially to uphold their community service and local philanthropic commitments. However, we think it is admirable that the AU chapter of DTD is taking on the service responsibilities of the other chapter. We are also glad that the AU chapter is not also under fire for hazing activities and is reported to be in good standing with the national organization.

For upholding the standards of their national organization and stepping up to show responsibility, we would like to give the AU chapter of DTD a pat on the back. Their actions reflect well upon the rest of the University and its commitment to community service.
