'This is the Night' for Founder's Day

Annual ball lights up Union Station's East Hall

Girls wore dresses in every color of the rainbow and men sported tuxedos at Saturday night's Founder's Day Ball in the East Hall of Union Station.

About 350 students and administrators showed up to the event, which has been sold out for the last four years, said Kyle Taylor, Student Confederation vice president and co-director of Founder's Day Ball along with Jonathan Mathis.

Gail Hansen, vice president of campus life and Gary Wright, assistant vice president of campus life, were among administrators who joined the festivities.

"It was just a classy event and students carried themselves well," Taylor said. "It was an impressive night."

Dancing was the main attraction as many students moved their hips to favorite songs from the high school prom and cover songs of '70s favorites.

Later, a DJ provided musical entertainment as students kicked their heels up and shouted "to shake it like a Polaroid picture," while dancing to Outkast's "Hey Ya."

Meanwhile, attendees dined on mini crab cakes, tortillas and salsa, brownies and cookies as well as enjoyed the cash bar.

Champagne flutes decorated with the theme "This is the Night" were passed out as party favors as students left the ball, eagerly looking forward to the surprises of next year's ball.

"My cabinet is doing good work," Taylor said. "It's always good to have a success and Founder's Day was a success." This was Taylor's first planned event since becoming vice president of the Student Confederation, AU's student government.

Proceeds for the event will be donated to a charity, Taylor said.
