Lady Eagles split weekend, but lose shot at first PL regular-season title with surprise loss to Lafayette

Lafayette Women's Basketball ended a 29-game losing streak and dashed AU's chances for its first Patriot League title with a 64-61 win over the visiting Eagles Friday.

AU won Thursday at Army, 49-41, behind 15 points from junior forward Chanel Hunt and 14 from senior guard Kaitlin Schuyler.

Against Lafayette, AU's Joanna Barnes hit a three-pointer with 1:09 left in the game to bring the Eagles (14-13, 9-5 PL) within one of Lafayette. The Leopards' Colleen Fitzpatrick, who had a career-high 15 rebounds, made two free throws with 18 seconds remaining in the game to seal the outcome.

AU's senior guard Chanel Spriggs tallied 18 points to lead all scorers. She was the only Eagle to score in double figures as her team shot 34 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 46-31.

The Eagles played from behind most of the game, not getting on the scoreboard for the first 5:30. They crawled back to within three at halftime and found two one-point leads in the second half, but couldn't break away from Lafayette (1-26, 1-13), whose last win came on Feb. 23, 2003 against Lehigh.

Second-seeded AU will face Navy Friday in Upper Marlboro, Md. in the first round of the PL Tournament.
