Male condoms, female condoms and dental dams were all involved in a lesson attended by six West African university administrators Thursday to learn about student programming involving safe sex, HIV and AIDS.
"[It was] nerve-wracking but I thought it was an amazing experience," said sophomore Chelsea Teravich, who gave the presentation.
Teravich is from The Naked Truth (TNT), a student group on campus dedicated to educating students about sex, contraception, alcohol abuse and STDs among other things.
The U.S. State Department's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs brought the administrators to the United States as a part of a six-week study to learn about student programming, according to Michael Rengstorf, one of the translators for the French-speaking administrators.
Although they will stay in the District for a week, they will be also be traveling to different schools from California to Louisiana, Rengstorf said.
According to TNT President Joe Porter, the administrators were contacted by an AU alum from the State Department who thought it would be a good opportunity for both TNT and the administrators.
The organization conducts about 20 programs on sex education and about 80 to 100 presentations per semester, Porter said.
