Women's Tennis sweeps weekend against league foes

The Lady Eagles finished over .500 in Patriot League play this season after winning two consecutive matches this weekend. AU defeated both Colgate and Bucknell 5-2 and 5-3, respectively.

On Sunday the AU Women's Tennis team traveled to Virginia to face Bucknell, where seniors Kristina Georgieva and Katarina Kollarova secured the top two spots, respectively, with their wins.

AU not only occupied No. 1 and No. 2 in singles play, but Sasha Zerkalova also defeated her opponent in the No. 3 spot.

In doubles action, freshman Julia Colarusso earned her 18th doubles win with partner Zerkalova this season.

The win over Colgate helped fuel the fire for AU going into Sunday. Zerkalova and Colarusso proved their talent by winning their doubles match, which ultimately broke the AU record for most doubles victories in a season. As of Sunday, the teammates have won 19.

Colarusso and Zerkalova defeated their competition decisively, while Georgieva and Kollarova added two more wins in the top two positions.

After the weekend, AU improved to a 12-7 record overall and 3-2 in the PL. The team heads back to the courts on April 7, when it hosts University of Maryland-Baltimore County at 2:30 p.m.

Rough weekend for Men's Golf at Bradford tourney

The AU Men's Golf team completed the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate Tournament with a disappointing 20th- place finish.

The Eagles finished with a total combined score of 917 (311-299-307, +53), 65 shots off the lead. The men were led by junior Phil Kief, who carded a 75 on the final day to finish 5 over par and in a tie for 34th place overall.

Head coach Josh Cupp felt that Kief played well but that this tournament had too many golf powerhouses.

"The red marker was running out of ink keeping track of some of the other school's scores," Cupp said about the color used to mark a score under par. "But the real difficulty was competing against schools that are able to offer their golfers the full four-and-a-half scholarships permitted by the NCAA."

Cupp said that while the conditions in North Carolina were good during the tournament, the Eagles were hampered by their inability to score when they needed to.

"Our ability to turn three shots into two is miserable," Cupp said. "The guys are dropping shots when they shouldn't be."

The tournament was won by Campbell University, which finished with a final score of 852, 12 shots below par.

The individual winner was a tie between Andy Bare of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Braxton Wynns of Campbell University. Both golfers finished with a combined score of 205, a whopping 11 shots below par.
