Mayor Anthony Williams is trying to lure Major League Baseball to the District with a new stadium.
D.C. is one of seven cities lobbying for the Montreal Expos to be relocated to within their borders. Major League Baseball officials will only move the team to a city that can provide a stadium.
The Washington Times broke the news of Williams' new offer of a $340 million to $385 million stadium that would be fully funded by the District April 9. Last year, Williams proposed a $436 million stadium that would have been partly funded by the team owners.
The cost would include the $13 million needed to renovate the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium to be used as an interim field.
Williams has not yet revealed where the money for this stadium will come from.
David Catania (R-At Large) said in The Washington Post Saturday that he would object to any plan that would raise taxes to finance the stadium. If the city succeeds in its bid for the team, it would be the first major league team to play in the District since the Washington Senators moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1971.
