'Once an Eagle, always an Eagle'

AU mascot tells of troubled past

He's known as the prolific 5-foot-11 shooting guard for the AU Men's Basketball team, but there's a darker side of Clawed that the fans don't know about.

Sitting in his nest in a rundown building in Southeast D.C. wearing only a wife-beater T-shirt and shorts, Clawed reminisced about a childhood gone awry.

"My father was a stool pigeon and a coke addict," Clawed remembered. "He didn't understand that the early bird got the worm, so we never ate."

As he continued to reminisce about his days as a young bird, he reached for a half-drunken 40 oz. of Natural Ice beer from behind the couch and lit up a cigarette. As the liquor began to settle him down, Clawed talked earnestly about the first time he set foot in Bender Arena.

"When I came as a freshman out of high school, I thought things would be different," Clawed said. "But two national championships and thousands of pounds of crack later, I realized that nothing ever changes." Clawed also said that he and head coach Jonas Jeffries had never really gotten along. Jeffries begged to differ.

"I tried to help him through the tough times," Jeffries said, "but off the court it was nothing but the nose candy." Jeffries added that after the Eagles second national championship victory, Clawed went on a binge like never before.

"He was so messed up that he could hardly see straight," Jeffries said. "I knew there was nothing I could do."

Clawed said that he had tried to go to rehab in the past but that there was no hope for an eagle in his position. "It's like the slogan goes," Clawed said, "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle"
