Top 10 sporting events you won't see this year

Each year, area sports teams strive higher and continue to achieve beyond expectations. Sports fans flock to games religiously and love when the teams make it to the post-season or give out that extra effort. With this in mind, The Eagle Sports staff brings you these top 10 sports events AU students won't be seeing this year.

10. Professional baseball in D.C.

With Major League Baseball leaving the Montreal Expos' future in doubt, don't expect to hear the crack of the bat or any fans "root, root, rooting" for the home team inside the beltway this season.

9. The Track team

With a full track built around Reeves Field one would expect that AU's own Track and Field team might make an appearance once or twice a year. Don't count on it.

8. A Women's Volleyball loss in the Patriot League

With the loss of only one player to graduation, the Women's Volleyball team will continue to dominate the Patriot League for another season and continue its undefeated streak. The team has been undefeated in every game against a PL foe since AU joined the league in 2001.

7. A Field Hockey home game

Until AU allows the intramural "arsenic" field to be in play, AU Women's Field Hockey will continue its home field advantage at the University of Maryland.

6. Sold out Wrestling match

No matter the opponent nor the strength of the team, finding someone in the bleachers of a wrestling match is harder than an economics test on the first day of class.

5. Dorm sports without alcohol's influence

Even though they are banned and it's a dry campus, dorm sports end up waking up residents on the weekends after the bars close. The games tend to be pretty tame, just as long as your room is not the goal and a fire extinguisher doesn't signal half-time.

4. A Pep Rally on the Quad

The Quad is a great place to hang out, find out about a club or activity, or even protest, but students cheering for AU sports? Not going to happen. With school spirit unable to get fans for men's basketball, the only sport-related activity that will make it to the Quad is a game of Frisbee.

3. NCAA Tournament home game

Although the Men's Basketball team has been unable to make it into the field of 64, other AU sports have made it past the league tourney. Unfortunately this commonly involves plane tickets or a long bus ride for the team and its fans.

2. Midnight Madness

The staple of many basketball programs to kick off the practice season has been dead at AU for more than two years when the team backed out in 2002. The event was absent from the fall 2003 calendar.

1. Homecoming Football game

For all the new students, this is your friendly reminder that AU doesn't have a football team. Since there's no team, Homecoming tries to keep up with AU Soccer taking the field, but in the land of gridiron giants, it doesn't seem the same.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
