Singer-songwriters to play Tavern in August

Posted Aug. 6, 2004.

Singer-songwriters Gavin DeGraw, Marc Broussard and Toby Lightman will perform in the Tavern Aug. 26 starting at 8 p.m. according to the artists' publicists.

DeGraw is the most well known of the three, with his single "I Don't Want to Be" featured as the theme song to the WB's show "One Tree Hill." That track and "Follow Through," both from DeGraw's summer 2003 debut album "Chariot," have gotten some radio play. Rolling Stone lauds the young artist for his "impressively crafted lyrics," which seem to have slowly, but surely earned him a dedicated fan base. Some Web sites compare DeGraw with singer-songwriter Edwin McCain, who most people recognize for his late '90s love songs, "I'll Be" and "I Could Not Ask for More." DeGraw is signed with J Records, which has also signed Santana, Alicia Keys and Angie Stone.

Marc Broussard, 22, who released his second album, "Carenco," on Aug. 3, will open for DeGraw. His new album, an Island Records release, is named after his hometown of Carencro, La. It follows his July 2003 release "Momentary Setback." While E! has referred to Broussard as "a slightly more soulful John Mayer," the New York Post calls "a true soulman." AU students will get to judge his soulfulness for themselves the Thursday before classes start.

DeGraw and Broussard aren't strangers to the D.C. college scene, having opened for Maroon 5 at Georgetown University in October 2003. Georgetown's student newspaper, The Hoya, called the show "a concert marked by extremely beautiful and talented male voices." This year, both will be playing at the Recher Theatre in Towson, Md. the day after their AU performance.

Toby Lightman, 26, will perform in the Tavern, as well. Her 2004 release "Little Things," has gotten some recognition for the single "Devils and Angels." She has previously opened for Howie Day, according to MTV.
