The Eagle condemns the vandalism that occurred in the Muslim prayer room in the Kay Spiritual Life Center on Sept. 11. The incident occurred in a room typically left unlocked for students to come and pray. It's a shame that a prayer room can't even be safely left open in today's political climate.
It's especially embarrassing to have this happen on a campus that prides itself on diversity and tolerance. It's understandable for people to be angry or upset about the events that occurred on Sept. 11 three years ago. Grieving and remembering are to be expected, but violence is inexcusable. It goes without saying that the Muslim Student Association of AU had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks. With all the constructive outlets for responding to the 9/11 attacks, such as giving blood or donating money, it's sad that some people revert to destructive means of response.
Sept. 11 should be a day when those who died in the terrorist attacks are remembered and honored. The crime committed at the Kay Center tarnishes their memory. We commend the actions of the multi-religious Kay Center chaplains, who have pledged support of the Muslim Student Association.
