Campus brief: Mocktails to teach students that alcohol is no laughing matter

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week began yesterday with mocktail parties in McDowell floor lounges. The mocktails parties are the first events in a series of programs designed to promote safe alcohol use and alcohol awareness.

The Pan Hellenic Association, the umbrella group for greek groups on campus, will sponsor the week.

"We have such a variety of events and a number of different activities that are enticing to the majority of the student body," said Danny Kelley, coordinator of Greek Life.

"We try to identify programs that address responsible behavior. They complement different events that are an alternative to going out to bars," he said.

During the week, all students will be able to participate in a variety of events, from Late Night TDR, a luau in Letts and beer-goggle races on the Quad. On Oct. 28, Oree Banks, a former College Football Hall of Fame inductee, will speak on campus.

All events are sponsored by AU Greek Life and are free to AU students. For more information, see www.american.edu/greeklife.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
