Comedian Lewis Black hits AU for Homecoming Funny man Lewis Black, famous for his political and social commentary on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," will perform in Bender Arena Saturday night. The Student Union Board, which is sponsoring the event, expects 2,500 people to attend.
The self-proclaimed "man in black named Black" has also appeared in movies and television shows, including the comedy "Mad About You" and Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters."
"Personally, I think he's friggin' hilarious, but he was also the only guy available that we could afford, and I didn't want to bring Margaret Cho back," said Jason Geisinger, assistant director of SUB.
A native of Silver Spring, Md., and a graduate of University of North Carolina and Yale University, Black received the 2001 American Comedy Award for "Best Male Standup," according to Comedy Central's Web site.
Bringing him to AU costs 25 percent of SUB's yearly budget, but the organization hopes to make back half of it on ticket sales, Geisinger said.
Tickets are free for undergraduates, $5 for faculty and graduate students, and $20 for the public. Doors open at 8 p.m., and tickets can be picked up in TDR, the SUB office on the second floor of Mary Graydon Center or the Student Activities Desk. - COSTA CALOUDAS & BLAIR PAYNE
Greeks promote alcohol awareness National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, presented by Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol, will begin this Sunday and end Friday.
GAMMA will host alcohol awareness events in collaboration with residence halls throughout the week, including a dance party in Leonard, Late Night TDR Breakfast and several speakers, throughout the week, according to Danny Kelley, Coordinator of Greek Life.
Also, all floors of McDowell Hall will be sponsoring themed mocktail parties on Sunday, during which students can enjoy non-alcoholic beverages.
The week "tries to identify programs that address responsible behavior ... where the goal is to educate students of the abuses of alcohol and to provide alternatives to drinking," Kelley said.
Different events will be held in residence halls and around campus beginning Sunday. Updated information about NCAAW can be found at www.american.edu/greeklife. -JEANNETTE KIMMEL
