Metro Brief: D.C. to hit the Target for retail shopping

Target will open its first store in D.C., Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced Wednesday.

Target plans to break ground on the store in Columbia Heights this spring and open it in 2007, USA Today reported. The store will be publicly and privately financed.

D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham helped pass the council's emergency legislation that gave $42 million in public funds to lure Target. Part of the money will go toward a 1,000-space car garage that will eventually be owned by the city.

"For too long, District residents have been forced to go out of town for their retail needs," Graham stated in a press release. "The Council's action helps ensure a new major retail center, not only for Ward One, but for the entire region."

The $42 million will be covered by tax revenue the new store will create. The store will also create 500 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent jobs, according to Graham's statement.
