Poker, betting and hide-and-go-seek are all hallmarks of Derby Days, the Sigma Chi fraternity's fourth annual weeklong raiser to benefit the Children's Miracle Network.
Ten to 12 years ago, Sigma Chi adopted the Children's Miracle Network as their official philanthropy in chapters across the country.
Aaron Killian, Sigma Chi president, hopes to raise $2,000 through Derby Days, which would beat last year's total of $1,500.
Derby Days is normally held every spring around mid-March, but due to logistical reasons, it will be held from October 17-23, said Derby Days Coordinator Adam Stinelli.
"We have a couple teams ready to sign up," Stinelli said. "We will be tabling every school day until October 17."
For $35, a team of five can participate in events during the week such as Panera Bread night and a poker night in the Tavern. There will also be hide-and-go-seek in the Quad.
"Since the theme is 'Kentucky Derby Days,' we will be watching videos of horse races and will be betting on winners," Stinelli said. "On the last day, we will be holding a field day with activities such as dizzy bat and tug-of-war."
Last year 27 teams registered, making the total number of students that participated 135, according to Stinelli.
"I am hoping for at least 30 teams this year," he said. "For the past couple of years we have been increasing the number of teams by two to three."
Some Sigma Chi brothers are looking forward to the events.
"Derby Days is a great way to encourage overall school unity and participation and at the same time, teams are giving back to charity by donating the money to participate," said Mark Stern, sophomore Sigma Chi brother and Class of 2007 President. "Teams should have lots of fun during the week and will be doing service by donating to a great cause"
