All-American auction raises $2,000

The AU Class of 2005 raised almost $2,000 at the second annual All-American Auction Sunday afternoon in the Tavern. Around 30 to 50 student bidders turned out for the silent auction to bid on items such as dinners with professors and ice-skating for four on the National Mall.

"Most people came early to the auction and then returned late in the day to make sure they were still winning their items," Fluegeman said.

The Class of 2005 solicited faculty and student groups for their services or to donate gifts, said Cathy Fluegeman, chair of the senior class gift committee.

The highest-selling items were $500 worth of Kaplan GRE classes and a $110 lunch for four with President Benjamin Ladner. Senior Josh Fine, who stars on ATV's comedy show "Rip-Off," won the meal with Ladner.

Sports-oriented items were also auctioned off, such as a chance to sit on the Women's Basketball team bench for a game or to play basketball for an hour with AU men's player Ryan Graham.

Another item auctioned off was "Rick Treter: Pimp My Room." The prize involved having Treter, associate director of Housing and Dining Programs clean and help redecorate the winning student's room for four hours. A student will also get his or her car cleaned and washed, as that is a service the Class of 2005 Council offered.

Student Confederation President Polson Kanneth also gave his services and will allow the winning student to spend a day with him as "President for a Day."

"I won a four-course meal cooked by Tiffany Sanchez, the Director of New Student Programs," said Chris Repka, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. "I am pretty pumped that I get a real meal with three friends and I get to pick the date I want too."

Class of 2005 President Chris Salazar was pleased with the turnout.

"I am really excited about the success of the All-American Auction," Salazar said. "We changed it last year from a live auction to a silent auction and we also have a more diverse gift council that gives a broader appeal to students."

The Class of 2005 officers began planning four to six weeks ago, Salazar said.
