Dear Editor:
I enjoy a bit of civil disobedience as much as the next person, yet after reading your recent article, "Students mark Iraqi civilian deaths," and seeing the aftermath of the activities on campus, I must say that this was poorly thought out and a terribly executed idea.
As your article pointed out, the students were supposed to place the ribbons on the fence that is currently sitting on the Quad, and looking quite ugly, I might add. However, as we all can see, they neglected this instruction entirely, and blanketed the Quad and parts of North Side with these little pieces of ribbon.
Setting aside whatever ideological point it wished to make, the Community Action and Social Justice group only suceeded in creating a mess on the Quad. Who does it hope will pick up all these ribbons? I certainly hope that the group plans on doing this. And with the numerous ribbons tenuously taped to the ground, poles and benches, many are sure to become dislodged, and I have already seen a few littering the ground. Obviously the group had not planned for its demonstration to be an environmental hazard, but unfortunately that is what will probably happen. Besides, who wants to see 10 miles of paper all over your Quad?
Regrettably, what may have started as a noble-minded statement has only succeeded in polluting the Quad and creating an eyesore.
