The Women's Basketball team split its weekend, finishing third in the Southern Mississippi Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Eagles won the consolation game, beating the University of Southern Mississippi, 66-56, on Saturday night. The Eagles started hot, jumping to a 9-4 lead in the first three minutes, and led 37-25 at the half.
Forwards Chanel Hunt and Jenyce Woodruff scored 13 points apiece, and junior point guard Tala Hadavi hit four three-pointers in the victory. Leading scorer Joanna Barnes was held in check with six points.
In the second half, the Eagles stifled a number of USM runs to maintain the big lead and knock off the hosts.
Friday night, the Eagles lost to Austin Peay, 64-53, in the first round of the tournament. They were led by Barnes, who scored 21 points in the loss, but Hunt was the only other Eagle in double figures, with 12.
Hadavi, whose shooting opens up the Eagle offense, was 1 of 9 from the field, scoring only three points and committing four turnovers. Hadavi wasn't the only Eagle who struggled, as AU shot 35 percent for the game, compared with the 42 percent it shot Saturday.
In addition to her 21 points, Barnes grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals against AP.
The Eagles now have a week off before traveling to Baltimore to face the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
