Thumbs Up

AU Men's Basketball's big weekend ... Jason Thomas, Raimondas Petrouskas and crew won a pair of huge home games this weekend, vanquishing Bucknell on Friday night before routing Colgate on Sunday afternoon. They now sit tied for second place in the Patriot League, with another big game in Bender Arena next week against Holy Cross. It's hoped that students will come out next week to support the team.

AU faculty raise $700 for AIDS charity ... Members of AU's literature department read selected works at a Visiting Writers series held last week. Proceeds went to local AIDS charity Food and Friends to provide meals for people with AIDS. Attendees each donated $5. It's always encouraging to see faculty set a great example for students to be giving, which leads us to...

Southeast Asian Student Association hosts tsunami relief benefit ... The AU South Asian Student Association, along with the Georgetown SASA, SHARE, George Mason International Student Association and the South Asian Students of Hopkins, hosted a tsunami relief party at the Paper Moon restaurant in Georgetown. Admission was $15 and benefited various tsunami charities.

Iraqi students at AU voting in Iraqi elections ... It really hits home how big a step Iraq has taken toward democracy, when students who came to AU to escape dictatorship are able to vote in their home nation's election for the first time.

Thumbs Down

Auntie Anne's closing ... In a sea of full-meal eateries in Mary Graydon with Chick-Fil-A and American Pi as well as TDR, it was always nice to have a cheap snack option, and Auntie Anne's variety never let us down.

New TDR dessert setup ... Boo to the students who were stealing entire buckets of ice cream, forcing TDR to man the dessert stand permanently. The staff seems uninterested in getting patrons what they want, and often give them something entirely different from what they asked for.

Long lines at the Student Fitness Center ... Okay, we get it. You're buff. Stop flexing in front of the mirrors, and clear some space so the rest of us can work out.

The extra week of wait before the Super Bowl ... Tensions are high after a great series of playoff games, and the NFL squanders it by making us wait seven more days for the big Super Bowl payoff.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
