Eagle grapplers split weekend duals

AU topples Wagner for first team victory, earns 5 solo wins at Sacred Heart dual

After a heartbreaking loss against Sacred Heart on Friday, the AU Men's wrestling team rebounded to defeat Wagner and split its weekend series.

Sophomore Dwayne Hash-Barberis and freshman Josh Glenn picked up pins, and junior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov and senior Daniel Waters each registered technical falls en route to a 34-21 victory over Wagner.

"It was big for us to get a win," Hash-Barberis said. "Once again we faced some really tough opponents."

Tyler Flatt and Adam Montgomery both picked up forfeit wins in a match that also saw AU forfeit three bouts due to a depleted roster.

In the weekend's first contest against Sacred Heart, the Eagles won five of seven wrestled matches but once again lost due to forfeitures. The injury-plagued team was forced to concede three matches without a fight. Despite the loss, the team said it wrestled well against an opponent it had faced earlier in the year.

"We wrested Sacred Heart earlier this season, and it was much closer this time," Hash-Barberis said. "This is definitely something we can build on."

In the loss, AU picked up wins by juniors Tom Kniezewski and Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov as well as Daniel Walters, Tyler Flatt and Josh Glenn.

The Eagles' next match is Tuesday against George Mason, where they are confident they will be able to build on the weekend's victory.

"After the win we can take our positive attitude into practice and work with it," Hash-Barberis said. "It will definitely help us work towards another victory"
