Sports Brief: Individuals shine, but Men and Women swim teams lose out in weekend tri-meet

The AU Swimming and Diving team fell to Lehigh and Army in a triangular in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday and Saturday.

The Eagles seized five women's victories, but only broke through once on the men's side.

Freshman distance specialist Meghan Thiel continued her impressive rookie season, winning both the 500-yard and 1,000-yard individual freestyle races. Thiel completed the shorter distance in 5:03.13, winning by seven seconds, and the longer in 10:39.93, finishing with an 11-second margin.

Thiel also snagged second place when stepping down to the 200-yard freestyle.

Fellow freshman Erin Devlin also picked up a pair of individual victories. Devlin won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.26 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:30.32.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Moughty capped off the victories on the women's side, taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.97.

Junior Val Fomenko secured AU's only win on the men's side, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 52.01. He finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.23, and second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.46.

The Eagles host Howard and Old Dominion this weekend in their final triangular meet of the season. On Feb. 12, AU travels to Lewiston, Pa., for the Bison Invitational.

The Patriot League championship commences on Feb. 24, also in Lewiston.
