Thumbs Up

SC does not allow freshman Josh Goodman to run for president ... It's good to see the SC sticking to its regulations; they're there for a reason. It just makes sense that a student be required to be around for a year to get a feel for campus and student government before he or she attempts to ascend to a leadership position. AU has been burned enough already by students who won SC posts and then realized they couldn't (or wouldn't) be able to handle the job.

Baseball season is just around the corner ... On Tuesday we finally hear those four sweet words: "Pitchers and catchers report." Spring training is finally about to start, followed by another wonderful summer full of the national pastime, concluding, we hope, with the now-annual collapse of the New York Yankees.

Lavendar Languages Conference ... The 12th annual Lavender Languages conference took place at AU this weekend, giving students and professors from around the world the opportunity to have face-to-face conversations about such issues as homophobia and gender, sexuality, politics and "queer themes in public media." The conference highlights AU's status as a center for social discussion and debate.

'Antigone' ... The Department of Performing Arts' seven performances of Antigone drew rave reviews and big crowds to the Greenberg Theatre, reminding campus that the department is among the most underrated around.

Thumbs Down

D.C. is an AIDS hub ... According to The Naked Truth's "Toilet Paper," one in 20 D.C. residents has HIV or AIDS. This scary and sobering statistic is a reminder of the huge divide between the most and least fortunate in the District.

Loud sex on campus ... With Valentine's Day occurring on a school night, it's a perfect time for a little reminder that just because you're in the throes of passion doesn't mean that your neighbor isn't frantically studying for her 8:30 a.m. biology exam. If you really can't hold yourself back, just bite down on your pillow or something. More shuttle problems ... Several times in the last week, the campus shuttles have been operating late or not at all. This causes a big hassle for students who need to get from point A to point B.

AU Men's Basketball's tough weekend ... With the Patriot League season coming down to its homestretch, Jeff Jones' team struggled at Bucknell and Colgate this weekend, losing 65-52 and 67-57, respectively. With three games left until the PL tournament, the team needs to reverse its negative momentum if it wants to avoid another disappointing end to the season.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
