He says: Better than watching 'OC' reruns Guys, if you liked "Saw," you'll love "Hitch." Well, that's a big lie, but if that line didn't open this review, no guys would read a movie review about a romantic comedy. Regardless, "Hitch" is a far better movie than the previews make it out to be, and is one to which any guy can safely bring his date.
On the other hand, the movie reinforces the major male stereotype that women have already come to expect. Namely, that only two types of men exist: either the suave, handsome ladies' man who is perfect for everything except settling down (see Will Smith), or the hopelessly nerdy, average-looking guy who has sincere sweetness, but no sex appeal (see Kevin James).
Although the movie is entertaining, it's also unbelievable at times. The man-hating woman incapable of love (Eva Mendes) ends up with the relationship doctor (who is just as unlikely to love)? The glamorous and beautiful millionaire philanthropist (Amber Valetta) ends up with her goofy and overweight accountant? The love expressed on the screen seems a bit more grand than the one between yourself and the girl you met waiting in the new ice cream line at TDR.
All in all, "Hitch" is a thoroughly enjoyable movie that will make you and your date smile. After all, there's a great moral to the story. You can either be yourself, realize that doesn't work, but end up with the girl anyway, or try to be someone else, realize that too doesn't work, and still end up with the girl! It's win-win all around. She gets to see a cute romantic movie, and you get a break from her forcing you to watch her recently purchased "The OC" on DVD.
She says: 'Hitch' is heartwarming, hilarious
For all those last-minute planners, the perfect Valentine's Day date movie has arrived. "Hitch" is a surprisingly sweet, insightful and hilarious movie, the likes of which are rare. A romantic comedy told from a man's perspective, like "Hitch," has the prospect of more emphasis on the comedy than the romance, especially comedy of the women-are-so-high-maintenance-that-men-need-expert-help variety. But such an assumption is partially off base in this movie. Though Will Smith and Kevin James are constantly laugh-out-loud funny, they also provide incredibly charming and touching insights on life and love.
As the mythical "date doctor," Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Smith) helps hopeless men snag the women of their dreams by imparting slightly cocky, yet perceptive advice to these hapless lovers. Fortunately for Hitch, Sara (Eva Mendes), a gossip columnist, forces him to rethink his own love life and the effectiveness of the advice he provides his clients.
Perhaps even more touching than the love stories in the film is the relationship between Hitch and the men he advises, particularly the truly needy Albert (James). It is through these relationships that all of the heartwarming mushiness and side-splitting humor is expressed. "Hitch" is definitely a must-see for anyone, male or female, looking for constant laughter, stirring emotions or anything in between.
