Three D.C. area schools met to discuss gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues in the first conference of its kind Saturday at the OUTSpoken Conference, held at George Washington University.
"The passion and energy of students, especially those in D.C., are a powerful force today and will continue to propel us toward equality," said D.C. Councilman David Catania (I-At Large), the event's keynote speaker and the winner of the OUTSpoken Award.
Catania left the Republican Party in 2004 after President George W. Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.
GLBT campus groups, including the Georgetown University's Pride, GW's The Out Crowd, and Howard University's Black Lesbian and Gay Organization of Students coordinated the conference along with the Student Equal Rights Campaign, a network of GLBT college students in the D.C. area. AU's GLBTA groups were not involved, though individual students did attend.
