In "The Wedding Date," directed by Clare Kilner ("How to Deal"), Debra Messing ("Will & Grace") plays Kat Ellis, a single New Yorker going to London for her younger sister's wedding.
Kat hires professional male escort Nick Mercer, played by Dermot Mulroney from "My Best Friend's Wedding," to be her date, mostly because the best man at the wedding is Kat's ex-fianc?, Jeffrey, who dumped her two years earlier.
Nick is charming, handsome and smart - perfect for making Jeffrey (along with every woman at the wedding) jealous. Kat's family begins to think of the escort-undercover as the ideal son-in-law. Nick also plays the role of a therapist for Kat as she tries to get over the man that dumped her. As predicted from the beginning of the film, Kat and Nick's relationship becomes more than just a business deal.
It comes as no surprise that Nick means more to Kat than the 6,000 pounds she paid for his services, but we never really see how their relationship develops. The point of the movie is supposed to be how a woman gets a second chance at love, but Kat's relationship with Nick never goes beyond the surface of their physical attraction to each other. Some twists in the plot offer laughter and entertainment, but not enough to classify the movie as anything but a typical "chick-flick" romantic comedy. During one scene Nick says to Kat, "I would miss you even if I had never met you," which is just one of many clich? quotes that make up most of the movie's script.
"The Wedding Date" is a fun, light movie to see with a group of friends, but don't make it a date.
