American University has drawn the last straw. It shows no respect whatsoever for athletics and the hard work our student-athletes put in. And cutting the Men's and Women's Tennis programs, along with the golf program, is the final straw.
It is ridiculous for AU to be considered a credible school in the academic and athletic world when it pulls stunts like this. I have many qualms with its decision to cut the programs. First is the sketchy reasons behind such an act. Why these programs? Why were the athletes told during midterms? What about the hard-working coaches that have dedicated years to the program? Why now? Why in the middle of a year?
Second, these student-athletes enrolled at AU to play tennis, or they accepted their enrollment under the understanding they would play golf for four years. It is unethical and unreasonable to pull that contract in the middle of a college career. In essence, AU lied to each and every one of these athletes.
I have grown extremely close to many of these athletes, and it kills me to see how AU has thrown them around. With AU cutting their programs, it forces all of these extraordinary athletes, students and friends to consider transferring to more competitive, respectable schools. It pains me to say goodbye to such close friends, but it pains me more to see what AU will be missing out on.
These athletes not only dedicate a great deal of time on the court, but they are avid supporters of all AU sports teams, they contribute a great deal to the academic community and have put several hours of community service in this year. They are well-rounded individuals that contribute so much to the school community. By cutting tennis and golf, AU is cutting the integrity and respect of our school.
