Sports Brief: Swimmers gather wins going into PL championship

In the last tune-up before the Patriot League championship at the end of February, the Swimming and Diving team grabbed four individual wins in Bucknell's Bison Invitational Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.

AU's women, led by the youth movement of freshmen Alex Kinzler, Melinda Gilbert and Megan Thiel, and sophomore Kaitlyn Moughty, took home the most spoils for the Eagles.

Kinzler took first in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:30.60, and second in the 200-meter individual medley, in 2:17.95. Moughty and Gilbert took the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races, respectively, finishing in 59.10 and 2:18.20. Thiel, often AU's leader on the women's side, snagged a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing in 4:54.20.

On the men's side, experience, not youth, was the Eagles' key. Junior Valery Fomenko won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.79, while sophomore Stephen Brennan took second, finishing about a quarter-second behind. Junior Estebe Salgado took third in the 200-yard individual medley, in 1:58.51.

The Eagles have a weekend off before they travel back to Lewisburg for the Patriot League Championships, which begin on Feb. 24.
