Staff Editorial: Don't burn banners

A nylon banner advertising James Gardner's candidacy for SC president was stolen from the Quad on Saturday. The thief apparently burned the strings holding up the sign and made off with it. The weight of the sign and the metal grommets suggests that it wasn't a random decision to yank the sign, but a premeditated act to get away with it without anyone noticing it being dragged through the Quad.

This is a black mark on what had been until now a clean SC campaign. After a banner for Polson Kanneth and Jason Trombley was burned down twice last year, candidates this year seemed much more respectful of each other. (It should be encouraging for Gardner, however, that Kanneth and Trombley won their respective races for president and vice president after the burnings.)

Although it's unknown whether this was perpetrated on behalf of another candidate or just a vandal, there is no excuse for this behavior. Nobody knows who did it but it does give Gardner less of a presence without it. It seems to be a taunt toward Gardner as voting takes place.

In any event, it's completely unacceptable behavior, and if any candidates are behind it, they are clearly unfit to be leaders of the SC, as they have no sense of fair play.
