Howard University's student newspaper, The Hilltop, began publishing daily on Monday, making it the first newspaper at a historically black college to do so.
The Hilltop started publishing every Tuesday and Friday in 2001, and is now making the jump to five issues per week under Editor in Chief Ruth Tisdale, a junior political science major.
"Rest assured, if it happens on Monday, you will see it in the paper on Tuesday," said Maya Gilliam, The Hilltop's senior photography editor, of going daily. "It's like we say in the office, 'The revolution will not be televised, but it will be in The Hilltop.'"
Florida A&M University used to have the most frequently published newspaper at a historically black college or university, distributing three times per week.
Hilltop staff held planning sessions and workshops to prepare for the transition, The Hilltop reported.
The Princeton Review ranked The Hilltop the No. 1 collegiate newspaper in 2004, based on its popularity on campus.
There are only 102 daily college papers nationwide, according to the College Media Advisers. Many of these are at schools with larger enrollment. Howard University has an undergraduate enrollment of 7,063, according to the Princeton Review.
The Hilltop was founded by Zora Neale Hurston, author of "Their Eyes Were Watching God," in 1924.
