Most positions unopposed in RHA executive elections

Only one Resident Hall Association executive position is contested for spring elections, while the three others each have a single official candidate the Board of Elections announced Tuesday.

Candidates for president are Jason Hesch and Will Mount, both seniors in the School of Public Affairs.

The presidential position draws the most candidates because it is a high-profile title, according to RHA President Scott Goldstein.

"I think the position has been more visible this year," he said. "I have involved myself in many of the committees, activities and day-to-day work that presidents of other organizations have."

Jason Trombley, the vice president of the Student Confederation and a junior in the School of Communication, announced he would run for president on Tuesday but withdrew Wednesday due to a work commitment, although he has not formally withdrawn.

I'm pursuing a summer job offer that would require me to be back home in Oregon," Trombley said. "I can't be in Oregon and do job of this magnitude at the same time."

Adam Poulemanos, a junior in the School of International Service, is running for vice president of advocacy and community coordination.

Cynthia Purekal, a freshman in SPA, announced her candidacy for vice president of programming.

The sole official candidate for vice president of administration and finance is Michelle Reich, a junior in the SPA.

Poulemanos, Purekal, Reich and Mount are running on the same ticket.

The election will be April 4, 5 and 7 in all six residence hall lobbies. Voting will take place 12-3 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on campus, and 9-11 a.m. and 7-9 p.m. in Park Bethesda. Voting will be held on Tenley campus on April 4.

Voting was moved to residence halls this year to increase participation and reduce chances of fraud, said Katelyn Keegan, chair of the Board of Elections. Last year ballots were mailed to residents.

"Unfortunately, due to a timing issue with Mail Services, the ballots arrived with a [campaign] ticket's quarter sheets [advertising the candidates on the ticket]," Keegan explained.

"The ballot boxes in the lobbies were also unguarded last year, which allowed for potential ballot box stuffing, especially since many students threw out their RHA ballots with the quarter sheets," she added.

The board is also working with resident directors and resident assistants to publicize the election, as well as putting up signs and making voting hours convenient for students.

Results will be announced on the evening of April 7.
