AU women's teams drop D.C. rivals: Volleyball tops Hoyas in five

Coming back from a 2-1 deficit, the AU women's volleyball team ended a three-game losing streak by defeating Georgetown, 3-2 (27-30, 30-28, 28-30, 30-25, 15-13), on the road Tuesday night.

AU (6-7) came in having lost six of seven, while Georgetown entered with a two-match winning streak.

The Eagles were led by senior Cutrina Biddulph, who dominated the decisive game five, had 17 kills, including five in the fifth game, and hit .294.

Junior Elizabeth Maloney added 20 kills and .395 hitting percentage, and freshman Rubena Sukaj had 17 kills and .214 shooting.

Defensively Jennifer Cosco had a season-high 24 digs. Overall the AU shot .265 against Georgetown's .208. Tara Stradling and Christina Nash had 28 and 24 assists respectively. Stradling also added 11 digs.

The deciding game featured the Eagles seizing big leads twice and then the Hoyas rallying. It started with a 7-3 AU rally answered with an 8-3 Georgetown run to put the Hoyas up, 11-10. The Eagles won the next four points to go ahead 14-11, and overcame a late Hoya rally, winning the game 15-13 for the match.

In the final game the Eagles had an astounding .778 hitting percentage and made just one error. The Hoyas had a .250 percentage and made three errors.

Hours before, Georgetown controlled game one, taking the lead and never relinquishing it. The Hoyas hit .361 to cruise, 30-27.

The Eagles responded the next game, taking advantage of nine Hoya errors en route to a 30-28 win.

Game three had sloppy hitting from both teams, but the Hoyas took the lead early and never trailed won the game, 30-28.

Despite several lead changes, the Eagles rallied late to win the fourth game, 30-25.
