The university is now offering a one credit course to go along with student service on the school's Conduct Board. While it is unfortunate students have to be wooed with credit, it is good that some classroom education is included.
Many students (thankfully) have likely never heard of the Conduct Board, but it is a very active part of Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services (JAMS). Nearly 700 cases are adjudicated each year, mostly related to alcohol and drug violations, or refusal to obey RA's.
The decision to award credit for service on the Board also raises another issue. Many students give their heart and soul to various organizations, be they political, religious, or academic, and receive no credit from the university.
They aren't just signing up for a listserv or coming to get free pizza every month. These students get involved and run organizations with little or no supervision.
They will likely never appear before a JAMS session, so it would be nice if they got some recognition from the school they are serving.
