In his second meeting with students as acting president, Cornelious Kerwin helped open the new Mud Box coffee stand in the library. While the event was badly publicized it was good to see Kerwin doing something not done by Ben Ladner, mingling and talking with students on a personal level.
Much of the discussion focused on Kerwin's hope for a Rhodes Scholar, and a possible calendar change to have only one day for fall break and two additional days for Christmas. We think it would be a good thing for the university to aim high and try for the Rhodes. We already do well in the Presidential and Fulbright competitions.
We cannot help but be disappointed that Mr. Kerwin did not address the ongoing Ladner controversy. It is understandable that he may fee uncomfortable while an investigation is ongoing, but the AU community has not been treated well at all in this whole process. Students are not apathetic because they don't care, but because they have once again been shut out of the goings-on of their school. They want and have a right to know.
It is also disheartening that SG President Kyle Taylor feels there are no big problems at the university. The reason nothing is being said is not because nothing is wrong, but because the possible violations are so egregious it is embarrassing. Having someone the students elected playing into the hands of the administration does not give us hope that any transparency will materialize in the entire matter.
