Speak out on Ladner

I'm writing this editorial because I'm upset by what Dr. Ladner has done and I'm upset at student body's apathy towards this issue. President Ben Ladner has disgraced the school and should resign immediately for two reasons: 1. He has already ruined his own credibility. 2. The most important: he will ruin the reputation of the school.

Dr. Ladner's atrocious actions have cast a shadow over the school. It is true he has worked to increase the ranking of American University 13 spots in one year, improved academics and facilities. However, these facts should not blind students, faculty or the Board of Trustees from seeing that he must go.ÿ

A quick overview of what happened within the investigation: In August, a letter was sent out to students, faculty and staff of American University informing them that President Ladner was under investigation for embezzling money from the school. Since then, an investigation has been underway. The audit report shows the following: $500,000 had been used by Ladner for various expenses including European vacations, $44,000 on alcohol, $88,000 per year for a personal chef, $54,000 in transportation costs and the list continues. Let me make this clear, this is still under investigation.

The Washington Post reported Sunday September 25 that part of the board believes Ladner should "reimburse the university $21,000." I believe Dr. Ladner owes the school much more than that based on his flagrant spending habits. Even though his contract stipulated that "all meals in residence," were covered, that does not excuse hosting his son's engagement party at university expense or a $5,000 garden club party. It may not have been illegal, but certainly unethical. Also highly questionable is the 11% increase in salary for his personal chef, now resigned, but only single digit pay increases for professors. ÿ ÿ

Students need to be aware of what is happening. They deserve to be represented by an honorable leader who upholds the values of the school. The Board of Trustees, who according to the Washington Post, is split on whether to bring Dr. Ladner back, needs to know that the students are well informed and aren't ignoring this issue.

If Dr. Ladner is allowed to come back, why wouldn't he go back to his old ways? What would stop him? The Ladners don't understand what they did wrong and why they should reimburse the school.ÿ

Be Outspoken. Be Informed. Be Outraged! Be Pro-Active! This student body should not stand for the return of Dr. Ladner. ÿ
