Last week's hurricane not only displaced millions of people, it also ended some college students' semester before it even began. AU has graciously allowed affected students to enroll without rigorous requirements, and has found a way to use leftover dorm and Park Bethesda space.
While it's not what the students were expecting, the university should be commended for helping these students get back some sense of normalcy.
The AU student body has also responded in the storm's aftermath. An interfaith prayer service was held last evening, and it is encouraging to see so many students and clubs organizing supply drives, as well as cash donations.
While the students we are taking in lost their campuses, they did not necessarily all lose their homes. We should remember that many more people we will never meet will need all of our help in the coming months and years.
Hopefully AU students will not forget about Katrina's victims, but will donate time and effort through their own means or ways that AU affords. If you have a displaced student on your floor, be sure to welcome them,. Maybe even take them to TDR, since you can't go to Chic-Fil-A anymore.
