D.C. Council Member and former mayor Marion Barry, Jr. faces possible jail time after pleading guilty Friday to two misdemeanor charges of failing to file tax returns, according to the Washington Examiner.
Barry acknowledged he did not file or pay taxes to the Internal Revenue Service or the District on roughly $534,000 in salary between 1999 and 2004. However, he was indicted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for only the fiscal year 2000.
Barry, a Ward 8 Democrat, agreed to file returns, pay all taxes due and admit responsibility immediately after being notified of the criminal investigation.
He faces up to one year in jail and a $25,000 fine for failing to file a federal return and 180 days in jail and a $5,000 fine for not paying his District taxes. However, probation is being recommended. Barry's sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 18.
Barry served as mayor of the District for three terms until 1990 when he was arrested for possession of cocaine. He won back the mayor's office in 1994.
