National brief: Wilma is 21st named storm of the season

A tropical storm warning was in effect Sunday for the Cayman Islands and the system could affect the Katrina-battered Gulf Coast later this week, according to the Washington Post.

The system, which is currently classified as a tropical depression, could become Tropical Storm Wilma. Wilma would be the 21st named storm of the season, tying the record for the most storms in an Atlantic hurricane season.

Forecasters said water temperature and other conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are favorable for significant development.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30. If more storms form in the Atlantic, letters from the Greek alphabet will be used to name the storms, starting with Alpha. No storms have ever been named using the Greek system in the approximately 60 years the World Meteorological Organization has been naming storms.
