Staff editorial: Alcohol awareness week

For those who did not know, people at college drink beer. Unfortunately, many abuse the drink and become more of a burden than they are worth.

The university is sponsoring awareness activities all week to educate students on what alcohol does and what they can do to avoid bcoming a Sibley Hospital statistic.

Public Safety divulged that in 2004 there were 132 alcohol transports to the hospital, 87 for the calendar year 2005 thus far. Upwards of 90 percent of emergency calls are alcohol-related, according to Public Safety.

While AU is a dry campus, many students choose to frequent bars and restaurants throughout the city.

In a dangerous new trend, women have begun to try and outdo men at the bar. Most women cannot handle their liquor like larger men, and a mixed drink contains 400-500 calories from fat. Try fitting into that cocktail dress now, ladies.

Surveys have suggested many students drink because they perceive more of their peers drink than actually do. If you want to have fun you do not necessarily have to drink. But if you do anyway, be responsible. Leave the heavy stuff for Kiki and Ben Ladner.
