The scandal surrounding President Ladner has brought to light the paltry salaries of AU's professors.
One professor in the economics department has been thoroughly published but is still paid considerably less than other professors who have not been here as long.
This professor is understandably upset, but the way in which he has gone about righting this wrong is not acceptable.
A letter began circulating containing other professors names and salary figures, which is a violation of university policy on financial disclosures.
CAS, which oversees the economics department, has said that the process for deciding salaries is done in secret, and is merit based. One reason they gave for this professor being paid less is that the market wage for today is higher than when he was hired. This combined with the desire to retain faculty may have played a rolein the professor's dilemma.
Violating other people's privacy and causing dissension in the ranks is not the right way to get a raise. This professor should have followed the established procedure instead of acting in a manner not befitting an educator.
