Staff editorial: Shooting at The Avalon

The Avalon apartment complex, known for its nicely appointed living spaces, was the scene of a shooting Monday night, rattling the sense of security we all feel in Northwest.

AU students are very secure in this section of the city, but it should never be forgotten that we are in a farely large city, and one with a higher crime rate than the suburbs most of us hail from. Street smarts are vital, and something we hop e students learn to develop.

Northwest D.C. experiences random violence on a fairly regular basis. A man was shot and killed walking his dog last month, and two AU professors were robbed at gunpoint on Van Ness Street, not even a mile from our serene campus. It is believed that the person shot was an AU student, and that he knew his attacker.

Recent events aside, AU and its surrounding neighborhoods are as safe as you can get in Washington, D.C. Students should not change their lifestyles, but should remember where they are and what rules apply here.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
