Sports brief: Swimmers take solo and relay honors at Patriot Invitational

AU swimmers dived into the pool against some fierce competition this weekend at the Patriot Invitational. As of Sunday morning, the AU women's team was ninth overall and the AU men's team was eighth.

The three-day meet, hosted by George Mason University, featured eleven teams - the hosts, AU, Duke, Yale, Md.-Baltimore County, UNC-Wilmington, Shippensburg, George Washington, Seton Hall, Howard, and Georgetown.

For the AU women's team, sophomore Meghan Thiel took second place in the 500-yard freestyle. She was beat out by UMBC's Meghan Sackett, who ended up breaking the meet record in the event.

Thiel also swam to fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle.

On the men's side, senior Val Fomenko had two top-ten individual finishes by Saturday evening, placing fourth in 100-yard breaststroke and eighth in the 400-yard individual medley.

The men's team had two top ten finishes in relay events. Steve Brennan, Fomenko, senior co-captain Estebe Salgado and sophomore Chris Legget took eighth in the 200-yard free relay.

Brennan, Salgado, Legget and senior Kevin Falkstein placed ninth in the 200-yard individual medley relay.

The meet finished up Sunday evening, with results not available by press time.

Next for AU is the Rutgers Invitational in New Brunswick, N.J. on Dec. 2-4.
