A student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has been disciplined by the school for starting a Facebook group against the gay-straight alliance at the private Catholic institution, a right he absolutely holds, but executed in repulsive, if not atrocious, taste.
A spokesman for Facebook, which removed the group but not the student from the campus networking Website, said it do not allow "offensive" comments against people or individuals. The student has maintained that he has the First Amendment right to freedom of speech, and that he should not be required to write a ten page paper on the pro's and con's of homosexuality- the school's pathetic suggested punishment. Since when is being gay a choice, and at that, one with positive and negative implications?
Although the student calling homosexuals "sub-human" was offensive, he was not inciting violence, and was not in violation of any law. But his disregard for the lifestyles of others is unacceptably disrespectful.
