The AU campus has been deeply shaken by news of the death of Chris Salazar who, throughout his four years here, was arguably more recognizable a figure on campus than most student leaders, professors or administrators. Sunday morning's fatal fall ended a life defined by individuality, passion and empathy.
Salazar loved his time at AU, and wanted to make the most of his time in college, according to friends.
Salazar graduated in May from the School of Public Affairs and was president of the class of 2005 all four years. He worked as an RA in McDowell and could be counted on for a light-hearted smile, a cheerful hello or emotional support. For those who knew him, he was impossible not to like, and even many of those who never met him recognized him.
Chris was a vocal activist for social justice and believed strongly in equal rights. He committed a great deal of his time in college to advocating for these causes and worked with the Human Rights Campaign after graduation.
There is no question that Salazar's death will be felt well beyond our campus and into the community at large. At 22, his accomplishments were numerous and the circle of people he touched was already vast. He will be greatly missed.
