Web site provides 'Candy' fix for D.C. residents

If DailyCandy.com were a student on campus, she would be the girl who's well liked by everyone, gets good grades and is invited to every party and campus event throughout the school year. But what makes her especially different is the fact that she remains humble, and despite her high social status, wants everyone else to join in on the fun.

Originally launched in New York in March 2000, DailyCandy.com has expanded to seven cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and London - and recently, Washington, D.C. Founder and editor-in-chief Dani Levy launched the site with a goal of getting style and lifestyle information to anyone who wanted it, but in a faster outlet than magazines and including what is lacking in newspapers.

"She wanted an insider tip-sheet that was accessible to everyone," said DailyCandy.com editor-at-large Dannielle Romano. "You shouldn't have to be a fabulously wealthy investment banker or a well-connected style editor to have insider information."

According to Romano, you also don't have to be in New York or Los Angeles to be interested in style information. "Style-minded people are all over the country," she said. In keeping with this, the DailyCandy Everywhere edition allows its readers to access style information wherever they are, mostly through website links.

Receiving a DailyCandy e-mail is like getting a personalized letter from aforementioned "campus girl." Funny, smart and well-informed, DailyCandy's Washington, D.C., edition makes sure everyone gets the most out of the nation's capital.

Joanna Russo, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, was doing just that from her home in New Jersey.

"I've been getting the DailyCandy emails for a while, usually just getting the New York edition and later the Everywhere edition, but it's really nice having it in the city I'm actually living in now," Russo said.

Until recently, residents of the District had to rely on editions from other locations for their insider buzz. Launched in September, DailyCandy Washington, D.C., has received strong feedback from loyal and new subscribers alike.

Washington edition editor Annie Lou Bayly wants DailyCandy Washington, D.C., to be for people to really discover how cool Washington can be.

"Everybody thinks that D.C. is all politics and no style," Bayly said. "But there are a lot of stylish people here."

Bayly emphasized that busy lifestyles with jobs or class schedules can prevent people from truly getting to know the city. DailyCandy provides a quick dose of information without reading like a magazine or a guidebook.

She also encouraged students to engage themselves in the city. Whether they're freshmen from the Midwest or graduate students who have lived here for a decade, DailyCandy is all about discovering new things going on all over the city, from restaurant openings to store sales to beauty services.

Being cool is a requirement for their daily topics, not for DailyCandy readers. "When something is cool, it's going to be cool to everyone," Bayly said regarding the broad spectrum of people in the greater D.C. area. "DailyCandy fits every budget and every age, from a $10 burger to $1,000 bottle of wine, and even if the topic doesn't interest the reader, it will always be funny and enjoyable to read."
