Staff editorial: A user-friendly Metro

The Metro, which is the the sole source of transportation for many AU students, is scheduled to get a makeover. This one will not be as much cosmetic, but actually to make the 'Tro "tourist proof."

Some of the plans currently under consideration are changing the "Doors closing' voice from that of a female to a male. Some people believe that riders ignore the voice because it is a woman but would listen to a male's voice.

We disagree with that logic. During the week people are running all over town and anyone who has expereinced rush hour 100 feet underground, knows people are only thinking with their feet.

Metro officials are also considering having escalators run in only one direction at rush hour, to facilitate passengers moving quickly through stations.

One of the main targets of these changes is the endless stream of tourists that deluge D.C. yearly. Arrows will be added to explain where doors will open and how to maneuver through the station. We hope tourists, fresh with their first brush with farecard machines and the Metro map, will be better able to get with the game after all the changes.

Now if only we could get a stop on the Quad.
