Staff editorial: What exactly is the matter with Kansas?

A professor at the University of Kansas had to cancel the class he planned to teach after reaction to comments he made about religious conservatives.

The course was entitled "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism, and other Religious Mythologies." When the professor promoted the course as one that would hit fundamentalists in their 'big fat faces,' the angry e-emails came pouring in.

We feel that the professor squandered the chance to teach a class that had a lot to offer students, as well as the rest of Kansas. The state made history last month when the state board of education approved the teaching of intelligent design opposite evolution in its public school classrooms. A similar measure failed in one Pennsylvania town.

With so much controversy swirling around the issues of the formation of life, it would have been nice for the Univeristy of Kansas students to be educated on this emerging take on science. The professor's ill-advised ranting will only deafen the ears of Kansans even more and prevent any thorough discussion and debate from taking place.
