Five Web Ways to Waste Time

Wasting time is a favorite college pasttime. With about 15 credit hours a semester, the average student has 168 hours to kill each week. When there's nothing left to sleep through, the Internet is a great place to waste some time.

Students interested in things that are funny and poignant should hit up http://maddox.xmission.com. Called "The Best Page in the Universe" (by its creator), this Web site can fill hours that should instead be filled with homework and community service. This Web site features humorous commentary about Bill O'Reilly, "shitty" movies, racism and stupid people. Be sure to check out the "I am better than your kids" link, which features children's drawings that suck, complete with grades and comments.

For those less interested in reading, http://www.archive.org/details/movies is a website students can just sit back and watch. The Moving Images Internet Archive is a great place to watch free stuff. Its "universal access to human knowledge" allows anyone to watch hundreds of feature films, movie trailers, documentaries, independent news, deep dish TV, German cinema and more for free. This site may not have Hollywood's latest and greatest, but it's definitely worth a few minutes - or hours - of- not-so precious time.

Those interested in more interactive time-killers are sure to enjoy http://www.churchsigngenerator.com. This Web destination speaks for itself. Enjoy hours of sacrilege and blasphemy by creating church signs that say "Creed Sux" or "I'm going to hell." And, if the custom sign seems divinely intervened, purchase it in holy fridge magnet form.

Another great interactive site, http://grad.icmc.usp.br/~cipriani/bighole.php?lang=en asks the tough questions, like, "If I dig a very deep hole, where will it stop?" This Google Maps-based application allows users to click on any point on earth - perhaps a childhood backyard - and find out where a hole dug on that very spot would end on the other side of the earth. Touting the ability to solve the problems of those concerned with where they'd arrive if they dug "a very deep straight infinitous hole," this site is available in both English and Portuguese.

Finally, for the crafty types who wish to spend only part of their free time online, http://www.darklilac.com is perfect - Grandma's plastic covered couch perfect. Make any image into a cross stitch. Upload a photo or choose a Web-hosted image and this ingenious program will instantly make it into a cross stitch chart. Pending knowledge of the craft of cross stitch, this provides limitless possibilities in the fields of super-fannery (perhaps a tribute to Lindsay Lohan's Vanity Fair cover on a throw pillow?), and to-the-point but lovingly crafted dumpings (a framed cross stitch of you making out with a new lover).

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
